Page wire fencing, also known as field fence or woven wire fencing, is a type of fence commonly used in rural areas to enclose livestock, including horses. It is made of sturdy, interlocking wires that create a strong and durable barrier, ensuring the safety and containment of animals within the designated area.
The construction of page wire fencing involves vertical wires, known as stay wires, that are tightly woven together with horizontal wires, forming a grid-like pattern. The vertical wires are spaced closer together at the bottom and gradually increase in spacing toward the top of the fence. This design makes the fencing more robust at the bottom, where animals are more likely to put pressure on it, and more flexible at the top to prevent injury in case an animal attempts to jump or lean on it.
Page wire fencing is considered safe for horses due to several key features:
Sturdiness: The interwoven wires create a resilient fence that can withstand pressure from horses leaning against it or running into it.
No sharp edges: The construction of page wire fencing does not involve any sharp edges or protruding nails, reducing the risk of cuts or injuries to the horses.
Visibility: The open-grid design of the fence allows horses to see through it, reducing the likelihood of them becoming startled or anxious by feeling confined.
Containment: The close spacing of the wires near the bottom prevents horses from accidentally stepping through or getting tangled in the fence.
Durability: Page wire fencing is designed to withstand the elements, providing long-lasting containment for horses.
Predator deterrent: In addition to containing horses, page wire fencing can help keep predators out of the enclosed area, adding an extra layer of safety.
