Ashcroft was incorporated in 1952, but it has a history that dates back before the Cariboo Gold Rush in the 1860s. Indigenous people inhabited the area immemorial, including the Nlaka’pamux Nation and the present Oregon Jack Creek Indian Band, First Nations of Ashcroft Indian Band, the Bonaparte Indian Band, the Secwepemc Nation, and Cook’s Ferry. In the mid-1800s, the Nlaka’pamux Nation joined in the European fur trade when the first settlers arrived in 1859. Ashcroft was named after Ashcroft Manor in England. Ashcroft became a transportation hub for the trade, and the area was designated as Mile 0 for the Cariboo goldfields and BC Express Company. The Cornwall brothers built their own Ashcroft Manor, which became an iconic piece of history. The village is known for its charm and historical atmosphere and has been the site of plenty of popular movies and TV series over the years.
